Jason Economidis
Chief Executive Officer
A respected industry leader with extensive resources sector expertise and experience, particularly in the coal industry, Jason was appointed Chief Executive Officer of GM3 in August 2024.
With around 30 years’ experience in Australia and globally, Jason has worked across the mining industry value chain including operations, health and safety, contracting and as a key supplier.
As Chief Operating Officer Jason had responsibility for South32’s Australian operations of GEMCO, Cannington, Illawarra Metallurgical Coal and Worsley Alumina, overseeing over 8,000 employees and contractors across the country. In addition, he led the planning function for the global business. Prior to this three and a half year role, Jason was Vice President Operations at Illawarra Metallurgical Coal for two and a half years, driving stability and growth within those operations.
At Orica he held the position of Vice President Coal responsible for product and service supply and delivery across 25 mining operations in Queensland and New South Wales, and previously held senior roles including General Manager of the Coppabella and Moorvale Complex for Peabody Energy; Chief Operating Officer of Vale Coal Australia; General Manager of Goonyella-Riverside and Caval Ridge; Vice President Health, Safety, Environment and Community for BHP; and Chief Operating Officer of Discovery Metals, based in Botswana.
Jason holds a Master of Business Administration (Executive) from the Australian Graduate School of Management and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Blake Joppich
Chief Financial Officer
With an extensive industry background in financial and commercial management, Blake Joppich is Chief Financial Officer at GM3, leading the organisation’s financial endeavours and supporting functions. Blake’s depth and breadth of experience across finance and commercial leadership roles has included positions with large multinational organisations including BHP, Downer and Datamine – supporting these organisations in navigating the complexities of day-to-day financial management and contributing significantly to overall corporate strategy.
Most recently, Blake led the Mining Finance Team as Head of Finance, at M Resources, one of the GM3 owners. This experience underscores Blake’s dedication to shaping sound financial and commercial management practices, a practical and energetic leadership approach and ability to drive positive change within dynamic corporate environments.
Blake is a Chartered Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) degree. He is a Member of the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.
Glen Alsemgeest
Chief Technical Officer
As an experienced projects, mining and technical professional with a demonstrated history of working in the mining industry across Australia, Glen Alsemgeest is the GM3 Chief Technical Officer. In this role Glen leads the organisation’s major projects, governance, approvals, long term planning and external affairs activities.
Glen brings to the role his unique blend of experience across delivery of major projects and large-scale operational roles attained from roles across the mining industry with organisations including BHP, Peabody and most recently with South 32.
With more than 20 years of strong operational experience and an extensive background in project development, Glen has a disciplined and strategic approach to all facets of projects and operational processes including contract management, risk management, investment evaluation, and stakeholder and community engagement
A qualified Senior Site Executive, Glen also holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) and a Certificate IV in Business Management.
Sonia Lewis
Chief People Officer
Experienced leader in human resources management, Sonia Lewis, will become Chief People Officer (CPO) for GM3 from October 2024.
With several decades of experience within the resources industry, Sonia brings to the role proven knowledge and practice and a deep strategic approach to human resources, leadership and employee relations in the coal sector and more broadly.
Sonia’s focus is on developing a sustainable workplace culture focused on ensuring productivity through effective leadership skills, strong communication, recognition, and inclusivity and diversity. Sonia has also led both operational activities and workplace transformations ranging from start-ups, mergers and acquisitions, workplace closures, and business transformations.
Most recently Sonia held the position of Head of Corporate Administration for Mitsubishi Development responsible for HR and Corporate Affairs for their Australian mining business. Prior to this, Sonia held senior HR positions at South32 and BHP, including involvement with the Dendrobium Mine at its establishment.
She has a BA in Business Management with a Law major.
Simon Thomas
General Manager, Dendrobium Mine
An experienced leader with a strong background in operational leadership and maintenance management, Simon Thomas is the General Manager of Dendrobium Mine. Appointed as the General Manager in 2021, Simon has a deep connection to the Illawarra operations commencing work as a vacation student and progressing through several key roles at both Dendrobium and Appin Mines over his career with both BHP and South32 ownership.
He has developed his technical and leadership skills in roles such as Shift Maintenance Supervisor, Longwall Mechanical Coordinator, Longwall Superintendent, and Production Manager. These roles provided him with extensive experience across all aspects of the mine’s operations, providing Simon with the platform to lead and influence the ongoing success and performance of Dendrobium Mine.
Simon holds a Bachelor of Engineering – Mechanical (Hons) and a Master of Business Administration (Executive) from University of Wollongong.
Andy Hyslop
General Manager, Appin Mine
Bringing extensive underground coal mine management experience, supported by a focus on ensuring optimal productivity and safety standards, Andy Hyslop is General Manager of Appin Mine.
Across several decades in leadership roles with Peabody Energy, Glencore and Centennial Coal, Andy is well regarded for his technical expertise and leadership experience. In addition to his operational focus, Andy also has proven expertise in regulatory approvals, supply chain optimisation, business improvement and strategy development and implementation. This combined experience enables Andy to bring forward-thinking leadership to deliver sustainable growth and competitive advantage across the Appin operation.
Andy has a Master of Business Administration from the University of Wollongong and a NSW Mine Manager Certificate of Competency.
